Dr. J.D. Neubauer, a proud neurodivergent, is an Adjunct Professor in the Couples and Family Therapy program at the California School of Professional Psychology at Alliant International University. They earned a B.S. in Psychology from Iowa Wesleyan College and an M.S. and a Ph.D. in Marriage and Family Therapy from Mount Mercy University. They are an AAMFT-approved supervisor candidate and Clinical Fellow. They work in private practice at Insight Therapy Group in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Dr. J.D. Neubauer’s clinical and research interests are in integrating innovative approaches into therapeutic work, such as the application of tabletop role-playing games, and the expectation of their work on the internal relational illustration mapping process. Their clinical interests also include exploring anxiety related to identity formation within LGBTQ+ communities and understanding how neurodivergent and neurotypical individuals experience and relate to their internal parts. In addition, they are committed to developing group therapy experiences that center on tabletop role-playing games as a vehicle for connection, growth, and self-exploration. My clinical specialties focus on supporting LGBTQ+ adolescents and adults. I work with individuals and couples using a person-centered approach tailored to each client’s unique needs. I incorporate neuroscience and modalities such as Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Intimacy from the Inside Out (IFIO) to help clients explore their experiences with depth, curiosity, and compassion. My goal is always to meet people where they are and provide interventions that honor their identities, relationships, and inner worlds.
