About this live event

"When is it time to refer to a higher level of care in eating disorder treatment?" is one of the most critical decisions facing clinicians. This presentation will guide participants through the essential clinical, medical, and psychosocial criteria that indicate the need for stepping up care. Using current best-practice guidelines and real-world examples, we will explore how to differentiate between outpatient, intensive outpatient, partial hospitalization, residential, and inpatient programs. Participants will learn how to recognize warning signs, apply established criteria, and communicate effectively with clients, families, and treatment teams. The session will also address common barriers to referral—including denial, fear, and systemic challenges—and provide practical strategies for fostering collaborative, compassionate transitions that prioritize client safety and long-term recovery.

Learning Objectives

  • Use evidence-based criteria- such as APA guidelines, LOCUS, and medical necessity standards- to identify key indicators for a higher level of care in eating disorder treatment, including medical, psychiatric, nutritional, and psychosocial factors.
  • Differentiate between levels of care and understand treatment goals relevant to each.
  • Recognize the risks of delayed referral and explore ethical concerns around both care termination and appropriate use of virtual care.

  • Kate Fisch, MSW, LCSW

    Kate Fisch is a licensed clinical social worker and certified eating disorder specialist who earned her Masters degree in Social Work from Washington University in St. Louis and her undergraduate degree in Psychology from Indiana University, Bloomington. Throughout her 20-year career Kate has worked in a wide variety of treatment settings, serving diverse clinical needs, including the following: university-setting counseling serving students, multiple levels of care within the eating disorder field, treatment programming for chemical dependency, and also at an outpatient practice that she founded focused on individual therapy and intensive parent support and consultation.

    Kate is the Chief Executive Officer at Selah House which offers inpatient, residential, and partial hospitalization treatment for those with eating disorders, located in Anderson Indiana.
