Compassion in Action: Preventing Burnout and Cultivating Resilience

CE Hours 4

About this live event

This interactive workshop addresses the growing concern of compassion fatigue among professionals working in the human services field. The session offers practical tools to recognize the symptoms of compassion fatigue, promote resilience through interactive mindfulness techniques and create personalized sustainable self-care plans to enhance the mental health of professionals working in the community. According to Paiva-Salisbury & Schwanz, compassion fatigue, or the extreme stress and burnout from helping others, is widely considered to be harmful to professional well-being (2022). Compassion fatigue is often referred to as the cost of caring and it is prevalent in the area of early childhood education. A recent study published in the Journal of Community Medicine and Public Health found that 55% of early intervention providers reported medium levels of compassion fatigue, with many experiencing symptoms such as emotional exhaustion, detachment, and decreased job satisfaction (McMullen, 2024). While the symptoms of compassion fatigue vary from individual to individual, they most typically involve empathic drain and chronic exhaustion (Stringer , 2025). Additionally, a systematic review that looked at early childhood mental health, educator stress, and burnout, reported that early childhood educators face a higher risk of burnout than many other professions, with one-third intending to leave the field within four years due to stress and lack of support (Stein, Garay & Nguyen, 2022). This complicated issue has a ripple effect on families, businesses and the community. Several current research suggests that a primary protective factor for compassion fatigue is self-care, which involves behaviors and activities that may prevent physical illness while promoting physical and emotional health and personal well- being through building resilience. They have also stated that self-care is a critical component of compassion fatigue resilience because it can ameliorate the harmful effects of trauma work by lowering levels of secondary traumatic stress This workshop will explore the concepts of compassion fatigue, exploration of resilience techniques and plans for overall wellness. Participants will explore the signs and impact of compassion fatigue and secondary traumatic stress, engage in grounding techniques to foster resilience to manage stress and anxiety, and develop personalized self-care plans that focus on the many facets of wellness. The session includes experiential activities such as guided mindfulness practices, small-group discussions, and scenario- based problem-solving to foster peer learning and reflection. Participants will also leave with actionable strategies for a self-care plan to enhance their own wellness and support a culture of care within their organizations and community.
