Death Communication for Clinicians: Discussing End-of-Life with Clients

CE Hours 2

About this live event

This workshop focuses on improving death communication with clients specifically how to discuss end of life planning, how to have conversations with loved ones, and completing an advance directive. We will explore how to approach this difficult topic through case studies, reflect on our own death attitudes and death anxiety, and steps to healthy conversations with clients regarding life review, wishes if they are incapacitated, and identifying a health care agent. The workshop will include prompts that can be given to clients to help them articulate their own values and preferences for life-extending care, and communicate these to their loved ones.

Learning Objectives

  • Discuss their own attitudes towards death and dying and how it may impact one's ability to effectively work with a client toward end of life.
  • Identify a client’s level of death anxiety and client's openness to discussing end of life issues.
  • Recognize cultural and religious values that may impact a client’s willingness to discuss end of life or face their own dying process.
  • Explain what advance care planning and an advance directive is to a client.
  • Discuss how they would help a client identify one or more designated health care agents.
  • Discuss how they would help a client assess their own values and wishes if they were unable to communicate at the end of life.

This educational activity is intended for behavioral health professionals, including Psychologists, Social Workers, Counselors, and MFT's.
