Drama Therapy: Creative Techniques in Counseling

CE Hours 1

About this live event

This workshop introduces participants to drama therapy, the intentional use of drama and theater processes to achieve therapeutic goals and its application within group and individual counseling settings. Participants will develop a foundational understanding of drama therapy as a clinical discipline, including its professional standards, credentialing requirements, and relationship to the broader counseling and behavioral health field. The workshop will examine core drama therapy concepts, including aesthetic distance, permission, externalization, and playfulness, and explore how these principles support therapeutic engagement, expression, insight, and processing. Participants will be introduced to Emunah’s Integrative Five-Phase Model and examine how its structured therapeutic arc can inform the development and facilitation of experiential interventions.

Learning Objectives

  • Define drama therapy and identify the professional standards and requirements (NADTA, RDT) and be able to locate drama therapists within a broader professional counseling context.
  • Describe at least three core clinical concepts of drama therapy (e.g., aesthetic distance, permission, externalization, playfulness).
  • Identify the five phases of Emunah's Integrative Five-Phase Model and describe how this arc structure can inform effective experiential intervention.
  • Describe at least one experiential drama therapy technique (e.g., warm-up, role sculpt, ritual closure).
  • Evaluate how drama therapy concepts and techniques can be adapted or integrated into non-drama-therapy clinical practice, including individual therapy and other group modalities.
