Ethics Beyond the Rulebook: Navigating Professional Boundaries in Clinical Practice

CE Hours 3

About this live event

This interactive training focuses on the gray areas of professional boundaries and the real-world ethical decisions clinicians make every day. Can you accept a small gift from a client? Respond to a text after hours? Attend a client’s graduation? When does protecting a teen’s privacy conflict with keeping them safe? Rather than relying on rigid lists of “do’s and don’ts,” participants will explore how therapeutic purpose, client autonomy and vulnerability, power dynamics, potential risks and benefits, professional standards, consultation, and clinician self-awareness can inform thoughtful and ethical boundary decisions. The goal is not to make clinicians afraid of crossing a line, but to build confidence when boundaries feel less clear. Participants will leave with a practical, repeatable framework for recognizing potential boundary concerns, thinking critically when the line gets blurry, and making ethical decisions they can clinically support. This course is designed to meet the New York State requirement for mental health professionals to receive 3 hours of training on maintaining appropriate professional boundaries that was effective April 2023. This course is not New York State specific and can satisfy ethics and boundaries training requirements for any state. Slide deck and bonus resources included Recording: This class will be recorded and made available within 2 hours after the live lecture. Recordings are available for 90 days after the class.

Learning Objectives

  • Analyze common boundary dilemmas using relevant professional and ethical considerations.
