How to Feel Loved: A Conversation with Dr. Harry Reis

In this webinar, Dr. Reis will discuss with Dr. Lisa Firestone a radical, hopeful, and science-backed shift in how to think about love, revealing that feeling loved isn’t about making ourselves more appealing or lovable; it’s about showing our full and vulnerable selves to others and encouraging our loved ones to reveal their full and vulnerable selves to us. This is true for romantic love but also for the love we feel in friendships, family, and beyond. He will introduce five powerful mindsets—tools to help us feel the love we want with the people in our lives. He will discuss the 5 mindsets to feeling loved. Radical Curiosity mindset—being genuinely interested in another; asking questions Listening-to-Learn mindset—making space to truly tune in to another Open-Heart mindset—being kind and affirming to another for who they truly are Sharing mindsets-showing our vulnerabilities and inner world Multiplicity mindset—embracing the messy complexity in all of us

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the psychological and neurobiological foundations of feeling loved and how perceptions of love influence, emotional well-being, and relational connection.
  • Identify and explain the five love mindsets, and how each contributes to authentic connection and personal and professional relationships.
  • Apply practical strategies drawn from the five mindsets to deepen empathy, improve communication and foster mutual vulnerability and interpersonal relationships.
  • Examine relational habits, and learn to develop a personal line plan for integrating one or more of the five mindsets into daily life to enhance connection and belonging.

  • Dr. Harry Reis, PhD

    Dr. Harry Reis is Professor of Psychology and Dean's Professor at the University of Rochester. He is a leader in the field of Social Psychology and helped launch the field of Relationship Science. Noted for his contribution to theories of intimacy and responsiveness, he focuses on factors that influence social interaction and their consequences for health and well-being. He has special interest in intimacy, attachment, and emotion regulation. Dr. Reis has published more than 250 scholarly papers. He has served as President of the International Society for the Study of Personal Relationships, Chair of the American Psychological Association's Board of Scientific Affairs, and President of the Society for Personality and Social Psychology. He is the recipient of numerous distinguished career awards.
