Navigating Ethics in Grief Work: Insights from Research & Real-World Considerations

CE Hours 3

About this live event

The grief researcher and thinker, David Kessler, has said, "Each person's grief is as unique as their fingerprint. But what everyone has in common is that no matter how they grieve, they share a need for their grief to be witnessed." As helping professionals, we’re in a uniquely meaningful position to accompany people during what is often the most difficult time in their lives: loss. It is imperative that those entrusting us with their journey receive quality care guided by sound clinical judgment and ethical reasoning. This presentation strives to equip professionals with the knowledge they need to: (a) understand key ethical conundrums facing helping professionals, (b) base their ethical decision making in the extant literature, and (c) be able to think critically and creatively about nuanced situations.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify and label common ethical considerations in grief work and counseling.
  • Articulate an ethical decision-making process for approaching myriad ethical dilemmas common to grief counseling.
  • Demonstrate increased critical thinking, synthesizing empirical findings and clinical experience, as applied to navigating complexity within presented ethical scenarios.
