On the Shoulder of Giants 2026

CE Hours 2.5

About this live event

“Beyond One-Size-Fits-All: Designing Mental Health Care That Works for Every Child” Too many children who need mental health support can’t get the care they need. Families often face long waits, fragmented systems, and limited access to specialists. The 2026 On the Shoulders of Giants Scientific Symposium will explore new approaches to youth mental health care that could help more children get support when and where they need it. The event will honor Peter Szatmari, MD, this year’s winner of the Sarah Gund Prize for Research and Mentorship in Child Mental Health. His influential work has shaped our understanding of autism and neurodevelopment. He will be joined by his protégés, Kathy Georgiades, PhD, and Stelios Georgiades, PhD, to explore how we can move beyond one-size-fits-all approaches to care and build a more responsive system that reaches children where they are — and adapts as their individual needs change. Following the presentations, former California Secretary of Health and Human Services Mark Ghaly, MD, MPH, will moderate a roundtable on how to turn these insights into real-world change. Experts from pediatric care, public health, and community-based services will consider where children should first receive help, the role of AI and digital tools in healthcare, and how to expand access without compromising quality.

Learning Objectives

  • Evaluate approaches to youth mental health care that can improve access and outcomes for children from diverse backgrounds
  • Assess ways to match children with the right care based on their individual needs, development, and response to treatment
  • Identify practical, system, and equity challenges to delivering care across healthcare, schools, communities, and virtual settings
  • Examine how AI and digital tools can expand access to youth mental health support while maintaining quality and safety

  • Peter Szatmari, MD, MSc, FRCPC, FRSC

Peter Szatmari, MD, MSc, well known for his work with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), has worked in the field of child and youth psychiatry for over 40 years. From 2013 to 2021, Dr. Szatmari was the Chief of the Child and Youth Mental Health Collaborative for the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), the Hospital for Sick Children, and the University of Toronto. More recently, his focus has been the design and evaluation of clinical interventions in child and youth mental health as well as epidemiological work, both nationally and internationally. Dr. Szatmari has over 500 publications in the field and has had continuous federal funding for over 30 years. In 2021, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada for his contributions to mental health.

  • Kathy Georgiades, PhD

Kathy Georgiades, PhD, holds the Dan Offord Chair in Child Studies and is a professor in the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioural Neurosciences at McMaster University and the Offord Centre for Child Studies. Her integrated program of research, mentorship, and collaboration is focused on improving child and youth mental health at the population level and reducing inequities in access to mental health care. She leads major population-based studies in Canada to understand the mental health needs of children and youth and identify gaps and inequities in access to care. Evidence from these studies can inform decisions about how mental health resources and services are allocated and targeted. When repeated over time, these studies provide the foundation for tracking changes in child and youth mental health and evaluating the impact of policies and practices at a population level.

  • Stelios Georgiades, PhD

Stelios Georgiades, PhD, is a professor in the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioural Neurosciences at McMaster University. He is Scientific Lead, Children’s Health Research and Director of the Offord Centre for Child Studies at McMaster University and Hamilton Health Sciences. Dr. Georgiades is the inaugural holder of the McMaster Children’s Hospital Chair in Autism and Neurodevelopment, a McMaster University Scholar, and a member of the Royal Society of Canada’s 2025 College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists. His research focuses on understanding the factors that shape developmental trajectories of children and youth with autism and other neurodevelopmental conditions, with the goal of improving evidence-based interventions, services, and outcomes for children and families.

He is founder and co-director of the McMaster Autism Research Team (MacART) and has worked closely with government and community partners for more than a decade to advance autism research, care, and policy in Canada and around the world.

  • Mark Ghaly, MD, MPH

Mark Ghaly, MD, MPH, is a primary care pediatrician and former secretary of the California Health and Human Services Agency. He has had a significant focus on children’s behavioral health needs, supporting many of California’s innovative investments to make mental health services more widely available to kids and their families.

  • David M. Levine MD MPH

David M. Levine, MD, MPH, is an associate professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, clinical director of Research and Development for Mass General Brigham Health Care at Home, and co-director of the Harvard General Internal Medicine Fellowship at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He is also a core faculty member at Ariadne Labs, a joint center between Brigham and Women's Hospital and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health for health systems innovation. To decentralize care and optimize quality time at home, his teams examine and implement novel treatment pathways, machine learning and robotics approaches to care, and the quality and experience of these models at home. His vision is for all patients to achieve the right care at the right time in the right place by designing, implementing, and evaluating innovative interaction spaces among the care team, technology, caregiver, and patient.
