Smoky Mountains Symposium On Relational Trauma

About this event

The Smoky Mountains Symposium on Relational Trauma is a continuing education conference designed for mental health professionals and helping providers seeking advanced, evidence-informed training in the assessment and treatment of relational trauma and its psychological, neurobiological, and systemic impacts. This interdisciplinary symposium brings together clinicians and educators with expertise in betrayal trauma, intimate partner violence, trauma processing, attachment disruption, systemic betrayal, nervous system dysregulation, personality structure, and therapist resilience.

Participants will explore practical and ethically grounded approaches for working with complex relational trauma presentations, including betrayal trauma, coercive control, sexual abuse, institutional betrayal, shame-based trauma responses, and trauma-related disruptions in emotional regulation and self-trust. Training topics address both client care and clinician sustainability, recognizing the cumulative impact trauma work can have on therapists and healthcare providers over time.

Conference sessions integrate current research, neuroscience, trauma-informed care principles, and experiential learning to strengthen clinical assessment, treatment planning, emotional stabilization, ethical decision-making, and intervention sequencing. Participants will examine approaches including Psychological First Aid (PFA), Predictive Processing FLASH techniques, somatic interventions, EMDR-informed applications, parts work, attachment-informed approaches, and personality-based conceptualization using the Enneagram framework.

Educational content emphasizes practical application to clinical work with individuals, couples, survivors of interpersonal violence, and clients impacted by relational and systemic trauma. Through lectures, experiential exercises, case discussion, role-play, and interactive learning, participants will strengthen their ability to recognize trauma-related responses, support client stabilization, assess readiness for relational interventions, and implement evidence-based strategies that promote safety, accountability, resilience, and therapeutic effectiveness.

The symposium also addresses the role of therapeutic systems and institutions in trauma recovery, examining how clinical responses can either reinforce mistrust or support restoration of self-trust, agency, and relational safety. Special attention is given to ethical considerations in trauma treatment, culturally responsive care, therapist self-awareness, and reducing the risk of iatrogenic harm in clinical practice.

This conference is designed for psychologists, counselors, social workers, marriage and family therapists, substance abuse professionals, healthcare providers, educators, graduate students, and other helping professionals seeking advanced training in relational trauma treatment and therapist resilience.

    Dr. Rachael Britton, PsyD, LP, is a mental health professional with over 15 years of experience, distinguished by her deep commitment to advancing therapeutic practices and client well-being. As the owner of Breaking Limitations Therapy & Consultation, LLC, Dr. Britton has built a practice centered around innovative therapeutic techniques and a profound dedication to her clients' healing journeys. Her career began with foundational training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), where she was part of a comprehensive DBT team for a decade. This experience shaped her understanding of both the benefits and limitations of skill-based approaches, prompting a shift towards more holistic and trauma-informed care. Dr. Britton’s focus on trauma and dissociation has led her to specialize in advanced techniques such as Prolonged Exposure Therapy, Exposure Response Prevention for OCD, and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). Certified as an EMDR therapist in 2016 and advancing to EMDR Approved Consultant by 2018, she has integrated parts work through Anchored Relational Therapy, enhancing her ability to address complex attachment wounds and emotional processing challenges. Her practice now includes EMDR and Anchored Relational (previously AIR Network) Therapy Intensives, aimed at providing clients with targeted, transformative experiences. Additionally, Dr. Britton has presented a previous CEU called Breaking Through Barriers: EMDR Therapy & Stabilization Techniques for Highly Dissociative Clients. Her comprehensive approach combines trauma processing, parts work, and coping strategies, creating a nurturing environment where clients can overcome limitations and achieve meaningful growth.

  • Anjahni Davi, MA, CHT, LMFT,
    Anjahni Davi, LMFT has been working in the healing profession for over thirty years. She began her journey of serving others in their own healing by walking on her own journey of healing as a teenager. Anjahni has an undergraduate degree from Prescott College, studying both Counseling Psychology and Holistic Therapies. During that time, she spent a year at Heartwood Institute, completing intensive independent studies in Hypnotherapy and Somatic Therapies. It was there that she completed training as Master Hypnotherapist. It was also during this time that she lived with some Blackfeet, Blood, Cheyenne and Arapaho teachers who helped inform her practice and her personal life going forward. Anjahni obtained her graduate degree in Transpersonal Psychology at JFKU in 2003 and was Licensed as a Marriage & Family Therapist in 2009. She has worked for over three decades in both in-patient and outpatient programs serving those with dual diagnosis including founding programs and leading groups and classes in the New York State prison system. Anjahni won an award for her Transpersonal Counseling Prison Program in 1998. Anjahni currently works part-time with pain patients at a health care organization, has a small private practice and founded Deeper Diving Retreats, Summits and Adventures, to bring those who love to travel and places off the beaten path. Anjahni is a former Board of Director member of C.U.R.E.-NY. She is a current Board of Director member of the Redemption Center in Queens, NY, a re-entry program for men returning home after extended incarceration. Anjahni has studied the Enneagram since 2002. Anjahni completed a year long practitioner certification program through TEN in October 2023. When not supporting others, you can find Anjahni planning a trip to some far off, remote location where she loves to connect with others, the natural world and take photos along the way.

    Jenny Hughes, PhD is a licensed clinical psychologist specializing in the treatment of trauma and PTSD. As a clinician, she practices Brainspotting, EMDR, and Cognitive Processing Therapy. Jenny is the author of The PTSD Recovery Workbook and Triggers to Glimmers: A Vicarious Resilience Journal and Workbook. As a leader in the field of vicarious trauma and resilience, Jenny serves trauma therapists, helpers, and healers as the founder of The BRAVE Trauma Therapist Collective. Jenny helps trauma therapists get their energy back and feel confident in their work again so they can end the day with something left for themselves.

    Jennifer Parker, MSSW, LCSW, ACSW is a therapist, trainer, and author of Coercive Relationships: Find the Answers You Seek, specializing in coercive control and intimate partner abuse. Through her work, she supports therapists who serve survivors seeking clarity and healing. She developed the Journey to Healing intervention framework, which provides structured therapeutic tools to help survivors understand coercive dynamics, rebuild trust in their perceptions, and reclaim their voice. Jennifer is the founder of Find Your Voice: End the Silence, where she advances professional understanding of coercive control by offering the Journey to Healing framework and related trainings. Her blogs and podcast interviews also provide resources for both therapists and survivors.

    Laura J. Reagan, LCSW-C, is a licensed clinical social worker, trauma therapist, and board-approved clinical supervisor based in Maryland. She is the founder of The Baltimore Annapolis Center for Integrative Healing and Trauma Therapist Network, and host of the long-running Therapy Chat podcast, which features expert conversations on trauma, attachment, relationships, and self-compassion. Laura has extensive experience working with survivors of sexual violence, domestic violence, childhood abuse, and complex trauma across clinical, hospital, military, and advocacy settings. Her background includes trauma-informed service delivery, crisis response, systems advocacy, and training for clinicians and allied professionals. She holds a Master of Social Work from the University of Maryland and advanced training in trauma treatment, including post-graduate study in trauma and certification as a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional.

Event Learning Objectives

  • Assess early treatment considerations related to safety, disclosure, and power dynamics in cases involving betrayal, IPV, and relational trauma.
  • Demonstrate and explain at least three evidence-based techniques that foster vicarious resilience, such as Reflective Supervision, Narrative Reframing, and Gratitude Journaling, and describe how applying these methods can enhance both provider wellbeing and client/patient outcomes.
  • Summarize the foundations of the Flash technique within the Predictive Processing Framework and its application in trauma reprocessing.
  • Demonstrate at least two trauma-informed strategies to support stabilization and re-establish a sense of safety following relational or institutional betrayal.
