Chronic pain affects millions of people across the lifespan and can have a profound impact on physical health, emotional well-being, daily functioning, and overall quality of life. This webinar provides an overview of chronic pain, including current perspectives on the nature and derivation of pain, factors that contribute to its development and persistence, and the complex ways it affects individuals. A special focus will be devoted to varying understandings of pain, options for assessing pain, and treatment options. Co-occurring, comorbid conditions will be discussed with an emphasis on at-risk populations who may experience chronic pain. Supports and strategies will be discussed aimed to improve quality of life and enhance comfort for individuals living with chronic pain. This course meets the “Pain and Pain Symptom Management” requirements outlined under Michigan State Public Health Code.

Christina Marsack-Topolewski, Ph.D., LMSW

Associate Professor of Social Work

Christina Marsack-Topolewski, LMSW, PhD is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in Michigan and an Associate Professor of Social Work at Eastern Michigan University. Her educational backgrounds are in Special Education, Social Work, and Gerontology. She has 20 years of experience supporting individuals with disabilities and their family caregivers. Dr. Marsack-Topolewski has published over 90 scholarly articles and encyclopedia entries on disability, family caregiving, dementia, and aging. She is an appointed board member of the U.S. National Task Group (NTG) on Intellectual Disability and Dementia Practices. Her research has been featured on National Public Radio (NPR) and ABC News Detroit and she also has provided expert testimony advocating for legal provisions to protect vulnerable populations-- two of these were signed into law in Michigan in 2023. In 2024, she received the Ronald W. Collins Distinguished Research Award for Research Excellence and the Arc of Oakland County’s Advocacy Hall of Fame Award.
