Tobacco & Cannabis in 2026: Old Approaches Up in Smoke!

CE Hours 1

About this live event

In-person CE Event - October 29th at 4:30 PM PT The tobacco and cannabis landscape your students navigate today looks nothing like it did even five years ago. Vapes have evolved past disposables into products designed to be nearly undetectable. Cannabis potency has climbed to levels that dwarf what previous generations encountered. And the old red flags counselors were trained to spot? Many no longer apply. Join Stephanie Lake, Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Intervention Services Coordinator for UC Davis, for a practical look at what's actually happening on campus and in your students' pockets. This hour-long presentation breaks down the shift from old-school products to today's high-tech, high-potency versions, and what that shift means for adolescent mental health. Stephanie will walk through current addiction warning signs, unpack real case studies and equip you with concrete resources you can bring back to your school immediately. Whether you're a psychologist, social worker, counselor, marriage and family therapist, alcohol/drug counselor, or administrator working with adolescents, this course will sharpen your ability to recognize what's really going on, start informed conversations with clients and families, and connect clients to the right support services before a habit becomes a crisis.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify and describe at least two emerging tobacco or nicotine products and explain how their design and use may complicate recognition of adolescent use.
  • Distinguish key signs and symptoms of Cannabis Hyperemesis Syndrome.
  • Evaluate the diagnostic criteria and clinical presentation of Cannabis Hyperemesis Syndrome.
  • Classify substance use disorder severity as mild, moderate, or severe based on the number of diagnostic criteria present.
