When the Body is the Crime Scene: Understanding the Function of Disordered Eating and Eating Disorders Following Sexual Trauma

CE Hours 1

About this live event

This seminar examines the adaptive function of disordered eating and eating disorders following sexual trauma. Clinical research indicates a significant relationship between history of sexual trauma and the subsequent development of an eating disorder. This intersection requires the implementation of trauma-informed interventions that address the somatic symptoms and cognitive patterns often found in post-traumatic stress. This presentation, led by Licensed Clinical Social Worker Amber Lucchino, will analyze eating disorders as coping mechanisms—or the survivor's most viable efforts to regulate emotional distress and trauma symptomatology. Participants will be encouraged to adopt a trauma-informed, compassionate framework while gaining evidence-based strategies to support recovery.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify at least 3 functions of disordered eating following sexual trauma.
  • Articulate at least 2 therapeutic interventions to assist in symptom reduction and stabilization.
  • Identify 2 screening and assessment tools available to administer with clients presenting with eating disorder symptoms and history of sexual trauma.

Target Audience

This educational activity is intended for an interprofessional audience of healthcare providers, including psychologists, social workers, counselors, MFT's, and dietitians.
